The AZATOM Woodlands packs a lot of features into a small and compact unit. There aren’t many other small budget radios on the market that offer so many features, including USB playback for playing MP3s and a handy remote control.

The sound quality is good for the price; it sounds clear and has a good amount of bass.

This product could work well as a bedside radio since it has a small footprint and features an alarm clock and sleep timer. You can set four separate alarms so you can choose to wake up at different times on different days. It’s also nice that you can operate the sleep timer using the remote control.

This radio can be plugged into the mains or used with the built-in rechargeable battery. It’s quite light at 720 g, and there’s a carrying handle so it’s easy to carry around the house. You can also charge it via a USB cable, which makes it a good choice for taking with you on caravan holidays.

The AZATOM Woodlands WD1 was designed using feedback about two of AZATOM’s earlier models, the Blackfriars and Spitalfields. At just 23 cm wide, the Zenith Z1 is smaller than you might expect from a boombox. This makes it quite easy to carry around the house or listen to in the garden. It has decent sound quality given its small size, and a good amount of volume.

The radio will find and save DAB stations and set the correct time the first time you turn it on. You can also manually tune the radio and adjust the time if you need to.

One of the Zenith Z1’s main selling points is the CD player. In addition to regular CDs, the CD player can also play CD-RWs and MP3 CDs which let you store over 100 tracks on a single disc. The CD player can be programmed to play up to 20 tracks in a particular order. There’s also a repeat function that can be used to repeat one track or the whole disc.

This boombox also features a USB port which lets you connect an MP3 player or USB drive and play MP3 files through the radio’s speakers. There’s also an aux-in port so you can connect another audio source using an aux cable.

The radio can be powered by the mains using the adapter included or with 6 C-size batteries. It might be more convenient to have a built-in rechargeable battery rather than C-size batteries, as they can be expensive to replace and time-consuming to recharge. The power lead connection is a bit fiddly and difficult to connect.

This radio doesn’t have an alarm clock or a sleep timer, so it’s not a good choice if you’re looking for a bedside radio. It also doesn’t have a headphone jack, so you can’t listen privately.

The Zenith Z1 lets you save a total of 60 preset stations: 30 on FM and 30 on DAB/DAB+. Setting preset stations is a bit more complicated than it could be, and the instructions (available online here) can be confusing. It might be easier to have 5 dedicated preset buttons rather than requiring you to scroll through a list of presets, as most people will only need to save a handful of preset stations.

The Pocket C1’s sound quality is surprisingly good given its tiny size. While the sound isn’t very rich or warm, it’s not tinny like you might expect. If you’re listening through headphones the sound quality will depend on the headphones you use. The Pocket C1 doesn’t come with any headphones included, so you will need to use your own.

The radio has generally good reception on both DAB/DAB+ and FM. However, reception will vary depending on where in the country you use it and also where in the room you position it. If you find a station cuts out on DAB you can always try switching to FM.

One unique thing about the Pocket C1 is that there are three ways to power it:

1. Using the rechargeable 800 mAH battery provided
2. Using 3 AAA batteries

You can listen to it through your car stereo by connecting a cable from the headphone jack to your stereo’s aux-in port. However, a plug-and-play DAB adapter might be a better choice if you’re looking for something specifically for the car.

Verdict

The AZATOM Pocket C1 is an impressive little radio with surprisingly good sound quality given its small size. One of the best things about this radio is that it can be powered in three ways (rechargeable battery, AAA batteries and mains). This makes it very versatile as a portable radio and could be a good choice if you want to listen to the radio while travelling or working.

This radio could be improved with a clearer battery indicator on the display and a keylock function, but overall, it’s a good choice if you want something compact, light and versatile.

The radio stores 60 preset stations, which is more than enough for most people. They will remain stored when the battery runs out or if there’s a power failure.

The Multiplex D1 connects to your phone via Bluetooth quickly and easily. If you’ve been thinking about getting an internet radio, a cheaper alternative could be to simply get a DAB radio with Bluetooth and stream internet radio through it from your phone using Bluetooth.

The built-in battery gives about 8-10 hours of playback time on a full charge. The radio can also be plugged into the mains. The USB charging point is very convenient for charging an iPhone or other smartphone.

Verdict

The AZATOM Multiplex D1 is a very versatile radio with a great list of features. It’s one of the best DAB radios in terms of value for money. It’s backed by a one-year warranty which should provide you with some peace of mind if you’re worried about its reliability.

AZATOM really ought to improve the instructions manual that comes with this product, as it’s incomplete and written in bad English, despite AZATOM claiming to be a UK-based brand. This product is made in China, and I suspect the company is based in China with the UK office being mainly for branding purposes.

The Multiplex D1’s key features are FM/DAB/DAB+ radio, Bluetooth and USB charging. There are a few other radios available with these same features. One is the Roberts Radio Blutune 50. It’s more expensive than the Multiplex D1, but Roberts is a more established brand than AZATOM. Like the Multiplex D1, the Blutune 50 has stereo speakers, which have a slightly richer sound than those of the AZATOM radio.

Considering the range of features and its overall performance, the AZATOM Home Hub offers value for money, especially when you compare it to similarly-priced products from better-known brands.

Design

The docking station is bigger than many of the alternatives, but it needs to be to accommodate an iPad. It has a modern design and doesn’t look cheap at all.

Alarm

The alarm function is separate to the alarm on your iPhone, but is very versatile. You can choose to either use an alarm sound or the FM radio, and it starts quietly and then gets louder, giving you a less stressful start to the day. You can also set it to just go off on weekdays or weekends if you don’t want it to go off every day. The display also has a dimmable night and can be completely turned off, so it won’t keep you awake if you have it on a bedside table.

One downside when using this Lightning dock as an alarm clock is that using the buttons is quite fiddly, especially in the middle of the night.

Verdict

For the price, the AZATOM Home Hub offers excellent value for money. It has impressive sound quality and an impressive list of features, so it’s not surprising it’s one of the most popular Lightning docks in the UK.
