Clock radios combine the functions of an alarm clock with a radio. They allow you to either wake up to a regular alarm sound or use a radio station as an alarm clock, so you can wake up to music or the news.

Lots of clock radios also have a sleep timer, which allows you to fall asleep with the radio on knowing that the radio will turn itself off after a set amount of time.

One of the top manufacturers of clock radios is Sony, who produce a range of highly-praised DAB and AM/FM radios. Some of these radios also have a useful time projector function, which projects the clock display onto the wall so you can see the time easily while you’re in bed.

Sony offer quite a large selection of clock radios, so it can be difficult to decide which to pick. We’ve listed them in order of which we think are the best.

Best Sony Clock Radios

1. Sony ICFC1PJ Clock Radio with Time Projector

The Sony ICFC1PJ (also known as the ICFC1PJ.CEK) is an AM/FM radio with a clock projection feature that projects the time onto the wall or ceiling. It also has a large clock display on the radio itself, which can be completely dimmed so it won’t keep you awake at night.

Verdict

Even though it only offers AM and FM and not DAB, we think the Sony ICFC1PJ is the best Sony clock radio on the market at the moment. The time projector function is very useful, and this radio works well overall.

If you want DAB, the Sony XDR-C1DBP is essentially the same radio as the ICFC1PJ just with added DAB/DAB+, and a correspondingly higher price.

2. Sony XDR-V1BTD Portable DAB/DAB+ Clock Radio with Bluetooth

The Sony XDR-V1BTD is quite a different kind of radio to the ICFC1PJ reviewed above. For starters, it’s a digital radio with DAB and DAB+, so you will have more radio stations to choose from. It’s also a larger radio, with stereo sound.

Verdict

The Sony XDR-V1BTD is a very well-made radio with some useful features such as Bluetooth and a built-in rechargeable battery. It doesn’t have the clock projection feature found on some other Sony clock radios and is relatively pricey, but apart from that it’s a great choice.

If you’re interested in this radio but don’t need Bluetooth radio, you should consider the Sony XDR-V20D, which is essentially the same radio just without Bluetooth.

3. Sony XDR-S61D Portable DAB/DAB+/FM Digital Radio

The Sony XDR-S61D is a mid-priced clock radio with DAB/DAB+ as well as FM. It has a generic-looking design and comes in either black or white.

Verdict

The Sony XDR-S61D is well designed and easy to use. The buttons are laid out well, making it easy to use this radio in the dark, so it would be a good bedside clock radio.

These days, you might expect to have some more advanced features such as Bluetooth given the XDR-S61D’s price, but if you only need the most essential radio and clock features, it’s a good choice.

4. Sony ICF-C1 FM/AM Clock Radio

The Sony ICF-C1 is similar to the Sony ICFC1PJ reviewed above. It’s an AM/FM radio with a cube-shaped design and time projector feature that projects the time onto the wall or ceiling.

This radio is few years older than the Sony ICFC1PJ and has less features, but it’s worth considering as it’s cheaper.

Verdict

This is one of Sony’s cheapest clock radios, so it’s not surprising that it’s also one of the least well made. While the Sony ICF-C1 has a nice-looking cube design, it has several serious flaws.

The wire antenna isn’t great and as a result the radio reception can be poor. Also, several buyers have found that the clock became inaccurate over time, so after a few months the clock would be a few minutes faster or slower than it should have been.

Conclusion

If we had to pick one Sony clock radio to recommend it would be the Sony ICFC1PJ as it is very well designed, with a useful clock projection feature and an attractive cube-shaped design. The ICFC1PJ is only an AM/FM radio though, so you may want to consider the Sony XDR-C1DBP instead, which is the DAB equivalent.

The Sony XDR-S61D is a mid-priced FM/DAB/DAB+ radio that could offer a good balance of affordability and quality. It has the kind of straightforward, functional-looking design that you’d expect from Sony, and is available in black or white.

Find out what the Sony XDR-S61D can do and how it performs in this review…

Features

Dimensions: 22.7 cm wide x 13.9 cm high x 9.5 cm deep

Performance and use

The Sony XDR-S61D is very easy to use and doesn’t really require any setting up—just plug it in, turn it on and let it find the DAB stations available in your area.

This radio is very well laid out, with an intuitive interface and well-located buttons. It’s one of the easiest digital radios on the market to use, so it could be a good choice for technophobes and elderly people who find other DAB radios to be too fiddly.

All of the most essential functions can be accessed using the well-sized buttons on the top of the radio, including a large volume dial and 5 useful preset buttons that let you access your favourite stations without having to scroll through a menu. Saving a presest station is very easy—you just hold down one of the preset buttons while tuned into the station.

The battery life on this model compares favourably to most other portable DAB radios on the market, which can often only last around 10 hours or less. According to Sony, this radio can run for up to 17 hours on batteries. You can also plug it into the mains using the adapter included.

The Sony XDR-S61D has some useful features including an alarm clock and a sleep timer, but it doesn’t have as many features overall as some other radios in this price range. In particular, it doesn’t have Bluetooth, so you can’t wirelessly stream audio through its speakers from a phone or other device.

For a radio in this price range, the Sony XDR-S61D has good sound quality, though the volume is quite limited so it’s only really suited for smaller rooms.

Verdict

The Sony XDR-S61D is a very well-made radio. While it may not have a huge list of features, it’s very intuitively designed, so it’s a great choice if you want something straightforward and easy to use.

Similar radios

One radio in the same range from Sony is the XDR-S41D, which is essentially a smaller version of the same radio, measuring 18 cm across compared to the Sony XDR-S61D’s 22.7 cm. The XDR-S41D’s small size makes it more portable, and it’s also cheaper.

If you’d like something similar with Bluetooth, the Pure Elan BT3 could be a good choice. It’s a similar size to the Sony XDR-S61D and can be powered with AA batteries. The Elan BT3 has a smart-looking design with a colour screen and is very easy to use.

For some more options, see our roundups of the best portable DAB radios and the best DAB radios on the market overall.

The Sony XDR-S41D is a small portable FM/DAB/DAB+ radio with a dual alarm clock. It can be powered by the mains or with 4 AA batteries. This radio is an update to the earlier Sony XDR-S40 model. It comes in a choice of colours: black, blue, red and white. Find out what the Sony XDR-S41D can do and how it performs in this review…

Features

Dimensions: 18 cm wide x 9.5 cm high x 3.6 cm deep
Weight: 431 g

Performance and use

The Sony XDR-S41D is very straightforward. It scans and finds all the stations available in your area automatically and saving and accessing your favourite stations is very easy with the 5 dedicated preset buttons. However, if you’re using it with batteries it will forget your presets when the batteries run out.

The sound quality is fairly good for a radio of this size. There isn’t much bass but it doesn’t sound too tinny either; there’s a decent balance of frequencies. Since there’s not much depth or detail to the sound, it’s better for listening to speech programmes than music.

Like most Sony products, the XDR-S41D feels fairly robust. It’s not as stylish as some other DAB radio radios on the market, but it has a functional design and is available in a choice of colours.

You can plug this radio into the mains or use it with 4 AA batteries. It might be more convenient for the radio to have a built-in rechargeable battery or battery charger so you wouldn’t have to charge the AA batteries yourself. Battery life can vary depending on how you use the radio and which batteries you use, but it’s unlikely to be longer than 15 hours.

In general, this radio works best when it’s plugged into the mains. You can’t use the alarm clock when powering it with batteries. Another issue is that the radio will lose your saved presets if it runs out of power when using batteries.

Verdict

The Sony XDR-S41D is a solid product which offers good value for money. It’s ideal if you want a small radio to for listening to speech programmes in the kitchen or bedroom but isn’t such a good choice for listening to music.

Similar radios

Sony manufacture several similar portable DAB radios. One is the Sony XDR-P1DBP, which is marketed as a pocket radio but features a powerful built-in speaker. Despite being smaller than the XDR-S41D, the XDR-P1DBP has comparable sound quality and volume. It uses a built-in rechargeable battery pack which is charged via a USB cable, which you might find more convenient than having to charge AA batteries yourself as you would with the XDR-S41D. Bear in mind though that the XDR-P1DBP can’t be powered by the mains.

One radio with a built-in battery charger is the Roberts Play which is a small portable digital radio. The Play has similar features to the Sony XDR-S41D but lacks an alarm clock.

Another good option could be the Pure Elan BT3, which is a portable DAB radio with Bluetooth and a colour screen. The Elan BT3 is very stylish and also features a dual alarm clock. Like the Sony XDR-S41D, it can be powered by the mains or 4 AA batteries, which you need to recharge yourself.

The Sony ICF-306 is a simple portable AM/FM radio that is the ideal size for carrying around the house or listening to in the garden. Let’s see what it can do…

Dimensions: 19 cm wide x 9.7 cm high x 5.1 cm deep
Weight: 399 g

Performance and use

The Sony ICF-306 is a very straightforward radio that is easy to use. The tuning knob is a little over-sensitive, but there is a useful LED tuning light to help you find the right frequency.

This radio has good battery life, and will last a lot longer on batteries than a portable DAB radio would. Unfortunately there’s no option to plug the Sony ICF-306 into the mains.

The Sony ICF-306 sounds decent for a radio of its size and price, though it is a bit tinny. Nevertheless, the sound quality is clear and not distorted.

It’s easy to carry the Sony ICF-306 around as it has a carrying strap and only weighs 399 g. The radio’s light weight means it’s easy to knock the radio over unless you lean it against something.

The radio’s sound quality could be better and tuning it in is quite fiddly, so our advice is to look elsewhere.

Similar radios

One of the best portable AM/FM radios in this price range is the Panasonic 2400EB-K, which is a bit bigger and heavier than the Sony ICF-306 but is easier to tune in and performs better overall.

If you want something very small and light you should consider the Roberts Sports 925, which is one of the best handheld AM/FM radios on the market.

The Sony ICF-P36 is a small and inexpensive portable AM/FM radio with a hand strap so you can carry it around easily. The radio has a built-in speaker as well as a headphone socket so you can listen privately if you wish.

Find out more about what the Sony ICF-P36 is can do and how it performs in this review…

Features

Dimensions: 13.2 x 7 x 4.3 cm
Weight: Roughly 220 g including batteries

Performance and use

At 13.2 x 7 cm, the Sony ICF-P36 is small enough to fit in a large pocket, and it also has a handy carrying strap. This makes it a very convenient radio for carrying around the house or the garden.

This radio generally has good reception on both AM and FM, and the LED tuning light helps you find the right frequencies. However, tuning it in to the right frequency can still be fiddly because the tuning bar is very short.

The radio doesn’t pick up digital stations, which makes it a bit backward in 2017. However, many people find that reception on FM is still more reliable than on DAB, and an added bonus is that AM/FM radios have better battery life.

The Sony ICF-P36 takes two AA batteries, which can be rechargeable batteries. The batteries should last at least 25 hours, which means you won’t need to replace them as often as you would with a portable DAB radio (where battery life can be less than 10 hours). The radio has a battery level indicator that will warn you when the batteries are about to run out.

Obviously a radio of this size at this price point isn’t going to have amazing sound quality, but like most Sony radios, the Sony ICF-P36 sounds decent enough. The built-in speaker is mono but you can listen in stereo through headphones.

The Sony ICF-P36 is very simple and easy to use. It doesn’t have any advanced features, but this could be a good thing if you just want a straightforward, no-nonsense radio.

Verdict

For the price, the Sony ICF-P36 Portable AM/FM Radio is a great little radio for listening to in the garden, taking on holiday or carrying around the house. It has excellent battery life and sounds relatively good for such a small radio.

The radio’s main flaw is the tuning system, as it can be fiddly to find the right frequency as the tuning bar is so short.

The Sony ICF-P36 is recommended if you want a small, straightforward AM/FM radio with no bells and whistles.

Similar radios

One popular alternative to the Sony ICF-P36 is the Roberts Sports 925. It’s a cheap and compact LW/MW/FM radio with a built-in speaker and a headphone socket. Like the Sony ICF-P36, the Sports 925 has a carrying strap and takes two AA batteries.

If you like the look of the Sony ICF-P36 but would like to get a DAB radio, the Sony XDR-P1DBP would be a good choice. It’s very small (11.5 x 5.7 cm) but has a high-quality built in speaker and can pick up both FM and DAB/DAB+ radio.

Performance and use

As you’d expect from Sony, the ZS-RS70BTB is sturdily built and feels tough and durable. It’s relatively light at 3.3kg, so you can carry it around without much difficulty.

The boombox can be plugged into the mains or used with 6 C-size batteries, which can be rechargeables.

The sound quality is very good for a radio at this price point, and it can be turned up loud without distorting. It has two 2.3W speakers giving a total of 4.6W of power, which is enough for small parties, group dance classes and so on.

The Sony ZS-RS70BTB has a USB port that will let you play MP3s from a USB stick or an MP3 player, and can also be used for recording audio from a CD or the radio. The USB port can’t be used for charging a phone or other device. If you’re interested in other radios with a USB port, see this article.

Verdict

The Sony ZS-RS70BTB is a solid portable radio CD player that offers great performance for the price. It has an impressive list of features, and offers plenty of volume and clear sound with a good amount of bass.

It could be improved if Sony added a remote control, and it can be hard to use in the dark due to the lack of a backlit display and the small size of the buttons. On the whole though, the Sony ZS-RS70BTB is one of the best radio CD players with a DAB radio and Bluetooth.

Similar radio CD players

One alternative that is likely to be cheaper than the Sony ZS-RS70BTB is the Roberts Zoombox2. It has most of the same features as the Sony boombox, though it doesn’t have Bluetooth. It’s also smaller and less powerful, with two 1W speakers rather than two 2.3W speakers.

If you want something even cheaper and don’t need many features, you should consider the Roberts CD9959 Swallow. It only has an AM/FM radio rather than DAB, and doesn’t have Bluetooth or USB.

A more high-end alternative is the JVC RV-NB100B BoomBlaster, which has an impressive list of features including Bluetooth, DAB radio, a Lightning dock and even guitar and microphone inputs.

It’s a no-frills product with AM/FM radio, an alarm and not much else. Let’s find out more…

Features

AM/FM radio

Automatically adjusts the time when the clocks change

Technical specifications

Dimensions: 10 x 10 x 10 cm
Weight: 480 g
Model number: ICFC1W.CEK
Clock format: 12 hours
Power output: 100 mW

Alarm

The Sony ICF-C1 works very well as an alarm clock. It’s well designed with some really useful features.

The alarm gradually gets louder so you won’t wake up to a stressful loud sound. It also has a snooze button that lets you extend the snooze period.

The display’s brightness can be adjusted so it shouldn’t disturb you at night. You can also project the time onto the wall so you don’t need to look at the radio itself to see the time when you’re in bed.

Ease of use

The Sony ICF-C1 has a simple design with just a few buttons on the top. Most importantly, setting the alarm is straightforward, unlike on many other clock radios that require you to press a complex sequence of buttons.

This clock radio is quite simple, which is good if you just want a basic clock radio. On the other hand, you might feel this product is overpriced given the limited range of features.

Radio

The Sony ICF-C1 has an AM/FM radio. If you’d like a clock radio with DAB, you could consider the Pure Siesta Rise. The ICF-C1 uses a wire aerial rather than a telescopic aerial, and generally has good radio reception, buyantibioticshere.com/ though it can pick up interference from phones.

The Sony ICF-C1 is a small, inexpensive clock radio, and as you’d expect the sound quality isn’t very impressive. The speaker sounds quite tinny, and while it is fine for listening to briefly in the mornings and evenings, it isn’t a good choice if you want to use it to listen to the radio for a long period of time.

Verdict

Overall, the Sony ICF-C1 is a good clock radio that does what it says on the tin. It has a nice design and an intuitive layout that makes it easy to use.

However, this clock radio isn’t perfect. The fact that mobile phones can interfere with the radio reception is a serious flaw if you keep your phone next to the radio. It also sounds quite tinny, and lacks useful features like USB charging and DAB radio.

Similar clock radios

For a similar price to the Sony ICF-C1, you could get a Majority clock radio like the Madingley Hall, which offers DAB radio and a USB charging point for charging your smartphone overnight.

If you’re not interested in DAB radio, you could consider the Roberts Radio CR9971, which is a very popular AM/FM clock radio from well respected British radio brand Roberts.

Weight: 2 kg
Model number: CFDS70B.CEK

Performance and use

CD player

The Sony CFD-S70 Boombox has a top-loading CD player that can play regular CDs or CD-RWs and MP3 CDs. This means you could burn hundreds of songs to a single disc as MP3s and play them on the CD player.

One good thing about the CD player is that it offers gapless playback. This means there isn’t any pause between tracks, so if you’re listening to a recording of a live concert or other CD where the tracks run into one another, you won’t notice it.

The CD player also remembers the track you were listening to when you switched it off and will let you resume playing from that point.

Cassette player

Depending on your age, the cassette player could either be the main reason why you’re interested in this product, or it might be completely irrelevant to you. If you have a large collection of tapes collecting dust, the Sony CFD-S70 Boombox will let you rediscover them. You can also use it to record from the CD player or the radio, though the recording quality isn’t especially clear.

It’s important to note that the product doesn’t contain a built-in microphone, so you can’t use this cassette player to record yourself. Some people buy the Sony CFD-S70 Boombox with the intention of recording themselves practicing an instrument, and only later realise that this isn’t possible.

Ease of use

The Sony CFD-S70 Boombox is generally easy to use, and comes with a clear and straightforward user manual. Most of the controls are obvious, so you will probably only need the manual for things like programming CDs and saving presets. These functions are intuitive too, unlike on many other machines where they are unnecessarily complicated.

Sound quality

This is a small and inexpensive radio, so you wouldn’t expect it to sound amazing. The Sony CFD-S70 Boombox sounds decent for speech and pop music, but isn’t great for genres such as classical music where you want to be able to hear finer details.

Verdict

The Sony CFD-S70 Boombox offers very good value for money. It’s not perfect when it comes to sound quality or reliability, but in terms of overall features and performance for the price, it’s a good buy. It’s one of the most popular CD/tape players in the UK at the moment, and with good reason.

This product’s main flaws are its somewhat tinny sound and issues concerning the reliability of the CD player. If you need excellent sound quality and a more reliable CD player, you should consider choosing a different model.

Alternative CD player radios

One similar product is the Roberts CD9959 Swallow. It offers an LW/MW/FM radio and a CD player, but not a cassette player. It could be a good inexpensive alternative if you don’t need a tape player.

A higher quality alternative is the Roberts ZoomBox2, which arguably has better sound quality than the Sony CFD-S70 Boombox and also offers DAB radio and a USB port for playing MP3s, though again it doesn’t feature a cassette player.

The Sony SRF-S84N is very small and light, so you’ll hardly notice it in your pocket. One of the most impressive things about this portable radio is its battery life, which is very long especially when compared to pocket DAB radios. It takes one AAA battery which can either be a regular battery or a rechargeable one.

Another strong point with this pocket radio is its AM and FM reception, which is impressive even if you live in the countryside. It doesn’t offer DAB radio, but given digital radio’s unreliability, many people prefer to stick to older analogue tech.

The radio comes with a pair of earphones included. The earphones provided have average sound quality, so if you already have a high-quality pair of earphones or headphones you might prefer to use those. The radio sounds good, and has a ‘Bass Boost’ feature for increasing the level of bass.

Verdict

The Sony SRF-S84N is one of the best pocket AM/FM radios you can get in 2017. It offers very good reception and battery life and should last you at least a year of regular use, possibly a lot longer.

Similar radios

Another popular pocket AM/FM radio is the Roberts Sports 995. Like the Sony SRF-S84N, it takes one AAA battery, and while the radio looks a bit dated, it will offer better battery life than an equivalent pocket DAB radio like the Roberts Radio Sports DAB5.

If you want to make sure your radio is ‘future-proof’, you should consider getting a pocket digital radio rather than an AM/FM radio. Read our roundup of the top pocket DAB radios here.

It appears to offer a great range of features for the price, but how does it perform? Let’s find out…

Features and specs

Weight: 8 kg

Performance and use

Bluetooth and connectivity

The Sony CMT SBT 100B offers wireless streaming via Bluetooth, and is also compatible with NFC. If your smartphone or other device is compatible with NFC, you can pair it to the Sony CMT SBT 100B just by touching it against the hi-fi to establish a wireless connection.

Bluetooth is useful for playing music from online streaming services such as Spotify or streaming MP3s from your smartphone or tablet. The hi-fi also has a USB port which you can use to connect an MP3 player.

Radio

This hi-fi offers a great deal of choice when it comes to radio. Not only does it have FM and DAB/DAB+, you can also listen to AM radio.

The display shows the station name and song name where available on both DAB and FM using FM RDS.

Ease of use

The Sony CMT SBT 100B is very easy to set up and start using, even if you’re not an audio geek. Bluetooth in particular is easy to use if you have a device with NFC, as you can just touch it against the hi-fi to pair the devices.

The one frustrating thing about using this radio is that it is often slow to respond. The CD loads slowly, and you will frequently see the words “Please Wait” on the display.

Sound quality

The speakers are more powerful than you might expect given their size. They offer 50 watts of power which can fill a large living room.

However, the sound quality is quite disappointing given that the stereo is made by Sony, and the speakers seem to have too much treble. This doesn’t mean the sound quality is bad, but if you’re an audiophile you might be tempted to replace this hi-fi’s speakers with some higher quality ones.

You might need to fiddle with the bass and treble levels for a while until you’re happy with the sound, as the stereo sounds quite treble-heavy by default.

Verdict

The Sony CMT SBT 100B isn’t perfect, but does offer a great range of features in a compact package. It offers good value for money compared to other hi-fis with similar features, but its speakers are disappointing and the device is often slow to respond.

Alternatives to consider

If you already have a pair of good speakers and are mainly interested in listening to CDs and DAB radio, you might want to consider the Denon RCDM40DAB Micro Component CD Receiver. This device offers very detailed sound when playing CDs, but doesn’t have all of the features of the Sony CMT SBT 100B such as Bluetooth.

Another popular Sony micro hi-fi system is the Sony CMT-X3CD. It has a CD player, Bluetooth and NFC, a CD player, USB port and a 20 W speaker, though no radio. The Sony CMT-X3CD is cheaper than the Sony CMT SBT 100B, but has less features and isn’t as powerful.
