Even though it only offers AM and FM and not DAB, we think the Sony ICFC1PJ is the best Sony clock radio on the market at the moment. The time projector function is very useful, and this radio works well overall.

If you want DAB, the Sony XDR-C1DBP is essentially the same radio as the ICFC1PJ just with added DAB/DAB+, and a correspondingly higher price.

2. Sony XDR-V1BTD Portable DAB/DAB+ Clock Radio with Bluetooth

The Sony XDR-V1BTD is quite a different kind of radio to the ICFC1PJ reviewed above. For starters, it’s a digital radio with DAB and DAB+, so you will have more radio stations to choose from. It’s also a larger radio, with stereo sound.

Verdict

The Sony XDR-V1BTD is a very well-made radio with some useful features such as Bluetooth and a built-in rechargeable battery. It doesn’t have the clock projection feature found on some other Sony clock radios and is relatively pricey, but apart from that it’s a great choice.

If you’re interested in this radio but don’t need Bluetooth radio, you should consider the Sony XDR-V20D, which is essentially the same radio just without Bluetooth.

3. Sony XDR-S61D Portable DAB/DAB+/FM Digital Radio

The Sony XDR-S61D is a mid-priced clock radio with DAB/DAB+ as well as FM. It has a generic-looking design and comes in either black or white.

The Sony ICF-C1 is similar to the Sony ICFC1PJ reviewed above. It’s an AM/FM radio with a cube-shaped design and time projector feature that projects the time onto the wall or ceiling.

This radio is few years older than the Sony ICFC1PJ and has less features, but it’s worth considering as it’s cheaper.

Verdict

This is one of Sony’s cheapest clock radios, so it’s not surprising that it’s also one of the least well made. While the Sony ICF-C1 has a nice-looking cube design, it has several serious flaws.

The wire antenna isn’t great and as a result the radio reception can be poor. Also, several buyers have found that the clock became inaccurate over time, so after a few months the clock would be a few minutes faster or slower than it should have been.

The Sony XDR-S41D is very straightforward. It scans and finds all the stations available in your area automatically and saving and accessing your favourite stations is very easy with the 5 dedicated preset buttons. However, if you’re using it with batteries it will forget your presets when the batteries run out.

The sound quality is fairly good for a radio of this size. There isn’t much bass but it doesn’t sound too tinny either; there’s a decent balance of frequencies. Since there’s not much depth or detail to the sound, it’s better for listening to speech programmes than music.

Like most Sony products, the XDR-S41D feels fairly robust. It’s not as stylish as some other DAB radio radios on the market, but it has a functional design and is available in a choice of colours.

You can plug this radio into the mains or use it with 4 AA batteries. It might be more convenient for the radio to have a built-in rechargeable battery or battery charger so you wouldn’t have to charge the AA batteries yourself. Battery life can vary depending on how you use the radio and which batteries you use, but it’s unlikely to be longer than 15 hours.

The Sony CMT SBT 100B offers wireless streaming via Bluetooth, and is also compatible with NFC. If your smartphone or other device is compatible with NFC, you can pair it to the Sony CMT SBT 100B just by touching it against the hi-fi to establish a wireless connection.

Bluetooth is useful for playing music from online streaming services such as Spotify or streaming MP3s from your smartphone or tablet. The hi-fi also has a USB port which you can use to connect an MP3 player.

Radio

This hi-fi offers a great deal of choice when it comes to radio. Not only does it have FM and DAB/DAB+, you can also listen to AM radio.

The display shows the station name and song name where available on both DAB and FM using FM RDS.

Ease of use

The Sony CMT SBT 100B is very easy to set up and start using, even if you’re not an audio geek. Bluetooth in particular is easy to use if you have a device with NFC, as you can just touch it against the hi-fi to pair the devices.

The one frustrating thing about using this radio is that it is often slow to respond. The CD loads slowly, and you will frequently see the words “Please Wait” on the display.

Sound quality

The speakers are more powerful than you might expect given their size. They offer 50 watts of power which can fill a large living room.

However, the sound quality is quite disappointing given that the stereo is made by Sony, and the speakers seem to have too much treble. This doesn’t mean the sound quality is bad, but if you’re an audiophile you might be tempted to replace this hi-fi’s speakers with some higher quality ones.

You might need to fiddle with the bass and treble levels for a while until you’re happy with the sound, as the stereo sounds quite treble-heavy by default.

The Sony CMT SBT 100B isn’t perfect, but does offer a great range of features in a compact package. It offers good value for money compared to other hi-fis with similar features, but its speakers are disappointing and the device is often slow to respond.

Alternatives to consider

If you already have a pair of good speakers and are mainly interested in listening to CDs and DAB radio, you might want to consider the Denon RCDM40DAB Micro Component CD Receiver.
