The only real difference between the Prestige H4 and H6 and the regular Evoke H4 and H6 is the finish. While the Evoke H4 and H6 both come in either an oak or walnut finish, the Prestige editions of these radios come in either high-gloss white or high-gloss black and have a more modern look.

The first thing you’ll notice about the Pure Move 2520 is that it’s very compact and has a sleek, stylish design. It’s truly pocket sized, so it’s convenient for using while walking around. The headphones function as an aerial, as it doesn’t have an extendable aerial.

Many pocket DAB radios come with earphones included, though they’re usually very cheap and poor quality. The earphones that come with the Move 2520 aren’t great, but they aren’t completely unusable either. One good thing about this radio is that you can adjust the bass and treble levels to get a better sound.

This radio is controlled using a rotary dial, which can be a bit fiddly and over-sensitive. The radio is generally easy to use though once you’ve got used to it.

Unlike many pocket DAB radios, the Pure Move 2520 has a sleep timer which you can use to program the radio to switch off after a set period of time. This is useful if you listen to the radio while drifting off to sleep, as mean you don’t run down the battery while you’re asleep.

You can also use this radio in the car by plugging one end of an aux-to-aux cable into the radio’s earphone socket and the other end into the car’s aux-in socket. This makes it a cheap and convenient alternative to replacing your old car radio with a new DAB radio.

This radio uses a bespoke rechargeable battery pack, the ChargePAK M1, which is charged via a micro USB cable (included). Pure state that the battery will last for up to 15 hours before needing to be recharged. However, in practice the battery is unlikely to last for more than 10 hours, which is quite typical for a pocket DAB radio.

Battery packs wear down eventually, so the battery life will deteriorate over time. However, it’s quite cheap and easy to buy a replacement ChargePAK M1 battery pack for this radio. This is in contrast to lots of other portable radios where it would be cheaper and easier just to buy a new radio.

Like all Pure products, the Move 2520 is available with a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty, which means you can feel confident buying it.

Verdict

The Pure Move 2520 is a quality product that’s worth the higher price. It’s well made and should last years of use, unlike cheaper pocket radios which can be very unreliable. This radio also tends to work well in the car using an aux cable, making it a versatile product.

Similar radios

Pure offer a few other pocket radios, the newest of which is the Pure Move R3, which was released in January 2018. Like the Move 2520, the Move R3 has an elegant design and a premium price tag. The two radios have very similar features, though the Move R3 feels a bit more modern with an OLED rather than an LCD screen.

A cheaper alternative is the Majority Petersfield-Go, which costs about half as much as the Pure Move 2520 at the time of writing. The Petersfield-Go is a compact pocket FM/DAB Radio which features a clasp for attaching it to your clothing. The Petersfield-Go works well but doesn’t have as many features as the Move 2520—it doesn’t let you adjust the bass and treble levels and there’s no sleep timer.

The Pure Elan BT3 is easy to use and it shouldn’t take you long to figure out its functions. It comes with an instructions manual (available online here), though it isn’t very comprehensive.

It’s easy to change between stations, especially since there are 4 dedicated preset buttons so you can quickly access your favourite stations without having to scroll through a menu.

The buttons are located on the front which isn’t ideal given how light the radio is. You will need to hold the radio with one hand while pushing the buttons with the other, otherwise the radio will fall over.

Since it’s a small mono radio, you can’t expect the Elan BT3’s sound quality to be amazing. However, it is good for a small radio and you can adjust the EQ settings to improve the sound.

The Elan BT3 could work well as a bedside radio since it has a dual alarm with a snooze function. There’s also a sleep timer which will turn the radio off after a set period of time, so you can drift off to sleep with the radio on. The sleep timer is accessed through a menu rather than just a button, which can be inconvenient if you’re in bed and want to extend the sleep timer.

You can power this radio with the mains or 4 AA batteries, which last for up to 10 hours. You’ll need to recharge the batteries in a separate battery charger since the Elan BT3 doesn’t have one built in. This could be quite inconvenient if you don’t already have a battery charger.

Like most Pure products, the Elan BT3 feels very well made. It’s available with a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty which is better than you’d get with most digital radios.

Verdict

The Elan BT3 is one of the best small DAB radios with Bluetooth. It has good build and sound quality for the price and is easy to use. If you want to use it as a portable radio it’s not the most convenient option as it doesn’t have a built-in rechargeable battery or a battery charger.

Similar radios

One of the downsides to the Elan BT3 is that it takes AA batteries but doesn’t have a built-in battery charger, so you need to charge the batteries separately. One similar radio with a built-in battery charger is the Roberts Play, which is an FM/DAB/DAB+ radio that can charge 4 AA batteries internally. Like the Elan BT3, the Roberts Play has a compact and stylish design, but unlike the BT3 it doesn’t have Bluetooth.

Another inexpensive DAB radio with Bluetooth is the AZATOM Spitalfields Retro DAB radio. The Spitalfields has a good range of features including an alarm clock and a remote control. It uses a built-in rechargeable battery which might be more convenient than using AA batteries in the Elan BT3.

The Evoke H3 has lots of useful features including a dual alarm and Bluetooth. In addition to Bluetooth, this radio also has an aux-in port so you can connect an iPod, phone or other device. You can also save 40 preset stations and quickly access your favourites using the 4 preset buttons.

The Pop Maxi has quite disappointing sound quality for the price. It offers plenty of volume, but sounds quite muffled. Also, you don’t get much sense of stereo separation because the radio’s two speakers are right next to each other.

Verdict

It seems like Pure have compromised a bit on the sound quality in order to fit so many features into this compact radio. While the Pure Pop Maxi has an impressive list of features, there are better-sounding radios available for the same price or less.

Radio

The Evoke C-F6 offers an exceptional amount of choice when it comes to listening to the radio. It has regular FM and DAB as well as DAB+ and internet radio, which allows you to listen to the 20,000+ radio stations that broadcast worldwide over the internet. Having DAB+ and internet radio means the C-F6 is ‘futureproofed’ against any change that might happen to the UK radio network.

One great thing about this radio is that it has 3 dedicated preset buttons so you can quickly tune into your favourite stations. You can save 30 preset stations in total, and station from 4 upwards are accessible by turning a dial.

Sound

The C-F6 has two 3-inch speakers each with 10 watts of power, which combine to give 20 watts of stereo sound. This means the radio can go quite loud, and should be easily powerful enough for the average household. You can also listen privately using the 3.5 mm headphone jack.

The Evoke C-F6 sounds warm and rich. If you’re not happy with the default sound you can select one of the EQ presets or adjust the levels to your liking. The volume levels can be different for different sources, so if you’re listening using the Spotify Connect app on your phone and then switch to FM radio, it might be a lot louder or quieter depending on the settings you had on your phone.

Connectivity

This radio has Bluetooth so you can stream audio from a phone, tablet or laptop wirelessly. There’s also an aux-in port for connecting devices that don’t have Bluetooth.

Internet radio is available via WiFi or using the RJ45 socket if you prefer to use a wired connection.

The Evoke C-F6 is compatible with Spotify Connect which means you can control Spotify from your phone, tablet or laptop and then stream it through the radio’s high-quality speakers using Bluetooth. This is a very useful feature to have if you’re a Spotify addict and want to enjoy your music through some top-quality speakers.

This radio also has an aux-in port which you can use to connect audio devices that don’t have Bluetooth.

Display

The colour TFT display shows information about the radio station and song being played, and will also read and display track information from CDs. It’s a good size at 2.8”, and is clear and easy to read, with intuitive menus.

Alarm clock

The Pure Evoke C-F6 has some useful alarm clock functions and gives you the ability to set two different alarms, which could be good if you want to wake up at a different time at the weekend, for example. You can choose to be woken up by a regular alarm sound, a radio station or a CD.

The C-F6 also has a sleep timer which you can set from 15 to 60 minutes so you can fall asleep while listening to the radio.

Design

The Evoke C-F6 is designed to be as attractive as it is functional, and it would make a nice addition to the interior of most homes. Like all radios in the Evoke range, the Evoke C-F6 has a beautiful wooden finish and feels well made and reassuringly heavy.

Control

The Evoke C-F6 comes with a handy remote control which is good for basic controls like changing the volume. The remote control uses watch batteries, which is a bit inconvenient when it comes to replacing the batteries.

You can also control the C-F6 using the Pure Select App, which can be used on both Android and iOS devices. The app is probably the best way to control the radio, as it makes finding internet radio stations much quicker and easier compared to scrolling through the radio’s menu.

Verdict

The Pure Evoke C-F6 might seem expensive, but given that it’s an all-in-one system with a great combination of features it offers, it seems to offer very good value for money. The radio looks beautiful and offers plenty of features with excellent all-round performance.

There does seem to be a quality control issue with this radio, however, as several people have published reviews online stating that they received a faulty model. This isn’t necessarily something to worry about though, as Pure offer a 3-year guarantee on this radio.

While the Evoke C-F6 is a great-sounding radio, Pure have compromised a bit on the sound quality in order to pack in so many features into the device. A better-sounding radio is the Ruark R2 MkIII, which is a DAB/internet radio with amazing stereo sound, though no CD player. The Evoke H4 is relatively expensive given its features, but its performance justifies the price tag. The H4 feels very well made and sturdy, and has excellent sound quality. It’s also very easy to use, and features like Bluetooth work effortlessly.

The H4 has some useful additional features including a dual alarm clock that sets the correct time automatically via digital radio, and will adjust itself when the clocks go forward and back. You can set the alarm to wake up to the radio or a traditional alarm sound.

One nice thing about this radio is that it has six dedicated preset buttons on the front so you can quickly access your favourite stations. Lots of other DAB radios just use a menu that you have to scroll through instead.

One of the biggest downsides with this radio is that the battery pack isn’t included. To use the H4 as a portable radio you need to buy Pure’s bespoke ChargePAK F1. The ChargePAK F1 is a good battery that gives up to 50 hours of playback time, but it is an additional expense. It would be nice if the battery pack was included by default, or if the H4 could take regular batteries.

Another drawback with this radio is that it doesn’t come with a remote control, which would be useful.

Verdict

There’s no denying that the Pure Evoke H4 is an excellent digital radio. It has a very stylish design with excellent build quality, and offers great sound quality and radio reception.

There are a few things that might make you think twice about buying this radio, however. The H4 is quite expensive for the features it offers, and it’s a shame the battery pack isn’t included. It would also be nice if the H4 came with a remote control, though this won’t be a deal breaker for most people.

Despite being small (30.5 x 12.8 cm), the Evoke H6 has very good sound quality with a decent amount of bass. The sound is well balanced, and not at all tinny.

The Evoke H6 is mains-powered by default, but you can buy a battery pack (the ChargePAK F1), which will make the H6 portable with a battery life of up to 50 hours. The ChargePAK works well, but it would be nice if it was included with the product rather than being an add-on.

The Evoke H6 feels reassuringly heavy and has great build quality in general, though the power plug seems quite poorly made.

Verdict

The Pure Evoke H6 has excellent sound quality and is a great radio for the kitchen or the bedroom. It would look great on a kitchen countertop, a bedside table or a bookshelf.

The Pure Evoke C-D6 is easy to set up and start using. It has dedicated preset stations to make it easy to save and access your favourite radio stations without needing to scroll through a menu. It’s also quick and easy to pair a device to the radio using Bluetooth.

The C-D6 feels sturdy and has a good amount of weight to it, though at roughly 4 kg it’s not too heavy to carry. The walnut-effect design gives it a classy, premium look and adds to the depth of sound.

The Evoke C-D6’s CD player has a slot-loading design so you just push the CD in rather than placing it on a tray. The CD player seems to be temperamental as many buyers have had issues with it stopping working after a few months of use, or being very slow to read CDs.

Like most Pure radios, the Elan E3 seems to be made of quality materials, and it feels sturdy and well built. It’s a small radio that’s made from plastic, but it still has a decent amount of weight to it and doesn’t feel cheap and tacky.

The Elan E3 is simple to use. It has a nice rotary volume control that is more satisfying to use than having to press separate ‘up’ and ‘down’ buttons. Storing preset stations is also straightforward using the dedicated preset buttons, so you don’t need to scroll through a menu like you do on many other small DAB radios.

Given that the Elan E3 is a small mono radio, you can’t expect too much from the sound quality. The sound is clear and is good enough for casual listening, but there isn’t much depth to it. The radio is fine for listening to speech programmes but isn’t so good for listening to music.

The Elan E3 works well as a bedside radio thanks to its dual alarms and dimmable display that can be turned very low so it won’t disturb you at night.

Pure produce a number of other affordable FM/DAB radios. One example is the Pure One Mini Series 3, which is a small digital radio that could be a good alternative to the Elan E3. One potential downside of the One Mini Series 2 is that instead of using it with AA batteries, you need to buy an expensive bespoke battery pack if you want to use it as a portable radio.

One alternative with better sound quality is the Sony XDRS60. It will probably cost you more than the Pure Elan E3, and it also lacks an alarm function, but if sound quality is important to you, it’s a good option.
