The Evoke H4 is a portable FM/DAB/DAB+ radio that forms part of Pure’s esteemed Evoke range of digital radios.
The Evoke H4 was released in 2016 along with several other radios in the H series: the H2, H3, H4 and H6. The H series features enhanced audio production technology, and several radios in this series (including the H4) also come with a colour display.
The H4 comes with in an attractive wooden finish, which is available in either an oak or walnut finish. Let’s see what this radio can do…

Performance and use
The Evoke H4 is relatively expensive given its features, but its performance justifies the price tag. The H4 feels very well made and sturdy, and has excellent sound quality. It’s also very easy to use, and features like Bluetooth work effortlessly.
The H4 has some useful additional features including a dual alarm clock that sets the correct time automatically via digital radio, and will adjust itself when the clocks go forward and back. You can set the alarm to wake up to the radio or a traditional alarm sound.
One nice thing about this radio is that it has six dedicated preset buttons on the front so you can quickly access your favourite stations. Lots of other DAB radios just use a menu that you have to scroll through instead.
One of the biggest downsides with this radio is that the battery pack isn’t included. To use the H4 as a portable radio you need to buy Pure’s bespoke ChargePAK F1. The ChargePAK F1 is a good battery that gives up to 50 hours of playback time, but it is an additional expense. It would be nice if the battery pack was included by default, or if the H4 could take regular batteries.
Another drawback with this radio is that it doesn’t come with a remote control, which would be useful.
Pros
- Sold with a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty
- Excellent sound quality
- Very good build quality
- Easy to use
- Good reception on FM and DAB
Cons
- No remote control
- Battery pack isn’t included
- Relatively expensive
Verdict
There’s no denying that the Pure Evoke H4 is an excellent digital radio. It has a very stylish design with excellent build quality, and offers great sound quality and radio reception.
There are a few things that might make you think twice about buying this radio, however. The H4 is quite expensive for the features it offers, and it’s a shame the battery pack isn’t included. It would also be nice if the H4 came with a remote control, though this won’t be a deal breaker for most people.
Similar radios
One radio that arguably offers better value for money is the Roberts Stream93i, which is an FM/DAB/DAB+ radio that also has WiFi so you can listen to internet radio stations. This gives you a huge choice of things to listen to (20,000+ radio stations from around the world). The Stream93i also comes with a battery pack and remote control included.
If you like the style of the H4 but would like something cheaper you should consider the Evoke H2 and H3, which have a similar design but are more affordable. If you’d like stereo sound you should consider the Evoke H6, which has two 10 watt speakers.
